Topics getting the most attention in Tompkins County public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Charter definitions of advisory boards, commissions, and committees
Chris Sponn warned that if his department's admin coordinator position isn't restored in the budget, he'll have to quit WDIC and CORE — a concrete example of how staffing cuts ripple into the county's diversity and inclusion work. Chair Pillar wants the position restored.
Shelter land-use override at 654 Elmira Road
Conceptual designs for a new emergency shelter will be shared publicly in early March, with a state HHAP funding application in April and construction hoped for spring 2027.
Public engagement and forums for charter review
The committee plans three public forums — early, middle, and end of the process — plus a possible public information series explaining the charter review. Members suggested January, mid-2027, and December 2027 as tentative dates.
Agricultural District Annual Open Enrollment
Four landowners asked to add about 144 acres in Freeville, Danby, and the Town of Ithaca to the county's two agricultural districts, which protect working farms from nuisance suits and restrictive local rules. A public hearing is set for May 19.
Expanding Protected Classes in County Policy
The county's equal employment opportunity policy lists fewer protected classes than peer jurisdictions like NYC and Westchester County. Irene Weiser is pushing to enumerate more — from caregiver and lactation status to lawful source of income — and to update the county's outdated non-discrimination webpage.
Pro-Housing Communities Certification
Six of the county's municipalities are state-certified pro-housing communities, unlocking grants like the $10 million DRI. The county can't certify itself but is offering staff help to towns and villages that haven't started.
Fair Housing Commitment Renewed
The county reaffirmed its 1992 Fair Housing Plan — but members flagged that it still relies on 1990 census data and may need a contracted update. The resolution keeps the county compliant with federal CDBG requirements.
County offices at 31 Dutch Mill Road
The county bought a former IT office building in Lansing for the Assessment and Office for the Aging, and a legal analysis concluded the use is immune from the town's industrial zoning. Better parking and one-level access should make these offices easier for the public, especially seniors, to reach.
